Georgie’s English Kitchen & Garden was founded in 2007 in Covington, Louisiana by British native Georgie Brooks Myrtle. Georgie’s family is from Leicestershire, a county in central England. Many of Georgie’s recipes were learned from her grandmother who baked in the traditions handed down from generation to generation. It is these traditional family recipes that Georgie brought with her when she moved from England in the early 1980′s.
Upon arriving in Covington in 1984, Georgie began baking and donating her Shortbread to church and school functions. Georgie’s Shortbread quickly gained a delicious reputation. By word of mouth, private orders began coming in, and Georgie’s English Kitchen & Garden was born. Georgie began selling at farmers’ markets in Covington and New Orleans. As volume increased, the farmers’ markets requested additional English products. Following the theme of “tea-time”, Georgie went back to her grandmother’s favorite family recipes. She now produces an array of freshly baked Scones accompanied by the best Fresh Lemon Curd ever made, and is a farmers market favorite.
As chance would have it, a good customer asked Georgie if she could sell her scones in their New Orleans coffee shop. After some thought, and several discussions it was determined that the scones would be best sold frozen and baked at the coffee shop as needed. It was from this request that Georgie’s English Kitchen & Garden envisioned a new frozen line, allowing you, the customer, the convenience of home-made “freshly baked” Shortbread and Scones, directly from the freezer to your oven within minutes.
In January, 2010, Georgie moved to a moderate sized commercial kitchen and bakery in downtown Covington. Today, Georgie’s freshly baked Scones and Shortbread are available at coffee shops in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Lafayette. Fine grocers in these cities feature Georgie’s “Freezer to Oven” line, as well as her Fresh Lemon Curd. While Georgie continues to sell her freshly baked goods at farmers’ markets, her customers are delighted that they can now purchase the frozen line to enjoy at any time, for any occasion.
